Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection Client on OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.2

Ever since Apple came out with Mountain Lion, support for Microsoft’s RDP protocol to remotely administer Microsoft Windows desktops and servers has been flaky or just not working. Oddly enough, people were more succesful using the reverse-engineered CoRD client. But this reverse-engineered solution had trouble with newer Windows versions, just because RDP is a bag of hurt.

If you have any issues using the Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection Client with Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 and higher, you should check out this thread on TechNet.

At the end, someone links to a new version of the client, hosted on Dropbox.

This claims to be version 2.1.2 of the Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac. Try it out and see if it fixes your issues.

Update

Just around the release of OS X 10.9 Mavericks, Microsoft has released two Microsoft Remote Desktop apps in the Apple App Store. One is both for iPhone and iPad, and another one is an app for OS X. – W, 28th of October 2013

  1. Found your article while Googling the latest version of RDP for Mac. It worked straight away!!

Thanks for the links and the pointers.

    Cheers,
    Hit

  2. I purchased iTap on the App Store for two of my users. Connected from Macbook to Server 2012 without issue. Worth the $30.

  3. Thanks so much for this. Wasted an hour fumbling with RDC for Mac 2.1.1 in Mountain Lion, finally Googled, found your post, downloaded 2.1.2, works a treat.
p.s. As a longtime Microsoft IT guy, I do take exception to “just because RDP is a bag of hurt.” As far as I’m concerned, RDP is the gold-standard of remote control facilities. We’ve used it all over the place with bulletproof reliability for over a decade.

    1. RDP is the gold standard, but the protocol itself is a bag of hurt if you’re not Microsoft but want to make an RDP client. Over the years, there’ve been inconsistencies and incompatibilities between versions, and no proper documentation exists for external developers because it is a proprietary protocol. Hence the reason you were trying to find a client that works from Mountain Lion, because even Microsoft’s versions turn out to be not compatible :).

  4. Another RDP client for Mac Mountain Lion is Ericom Blaze. Blaze is more than an RDP client, as it also compresses and accelerates RDP by up to 10 times, so it improves performance when accessing PDFs, PPTs, Flash movies and other graphics-intensive applications.

Ericom Blaze works with any standard RDP host, including VDI, Terminal Servers and remote Windows PCs.

Please note that I work for Ericom

  5. Thanks for posting the link with the updated RDP client.
Autoupdate on the mac said all was up to date.
Just the way I like to get my official Microsoft Software – on someone blog and nowhere to be found on Microsoft’s website 😉

  6. Hey !
For me it didn’t work because of domain’s name :
    – DOMAIN.local (does’t work)
    – DOMAIN (works)
